We just got back from a week in Barcelona where we enjoyed plenty of fantastic food, drinks, outdoor sights, and family time. Once again, we created a scavenger hunt for the girls to check off items from our travels, and they did a great job taking everything in.
One of the sights was La Sagrada Familia - a beautiful Catholic church in which construction began over 100 years ago and is still under works. It is projected to be finished in 2026, but it is nonetheless gorgeous at this point in time.
We also took a visit to the zoo. Taelyn loved the peacocks and flamingos while Kaelia loved the zebras. The highlight of the day, however, was watching the gorillas. There were two tiny babies with their mothers, two huge males watching over everyone, and a mid-sized silly gorilla that liked to through straw everywhere, jump on one of the mama's head, and pound its chest. It was highly entertaining.
As a family, one of the best activities we did was hike at the Modernist Park. It was a very large park constructed by a famous artist (the same person who designed La Sagrada Familia), full of beautiful pathways and structures that looked like ancient ruins. As we hiked further up, we saw the peak of the park (and of the city), and Taelyn insisted that we all walk to the top. So we did and had a chance to view the entire city. We all had a great time on that hike.
Another family highlight was going to the Camp Nou experience - a tour of the Barcelona futbol stadium. Justin actually went to a game one night to watch Barcelona vs. Madrid, but then we all went to the stadium for the museum and tour. We saw lots of trophies, jerseys, cleats, and awards that Barcelona has won since 1900. We also saw memorabilia for Messi - Barcelona's best player and the world's player of the year. Then we went to the locker rooms, press room, the stands, and finally, the field.
Barcelona is known for their tapas (small appetizers), so we took advantage and enjoyed lots! We especially liked the Mexican food and guacamole but also had our share of calamari, mushrooms, olives, and other tapas. Justin was excited about the numerous breweries, so we also had a chance to try lots of Spanish beer. There was even a mojito bar that served unique mojito flavors like wasabi, spicy mango, and cookie! The girls were excited about the desserts and had gelato and churros dipped in chocolate. There was a little bit of something wonderful for everyone.
We also could not leave Barcelona without visiting the beach. It was a little chilly in the 60's, but the girls still manage to get wet and play in the sand. We spent most of the time, however, picking up sea glass in the sand. Within 10 minutes, we had piles and various colors.
We had a great trip to Barcelona along with great quality time with our family. Here is a slideshow of the trip.
